what songs did your parents sing to you when you were little

i know your song laura, and yours too, rebekkah---the ones that you all said you can't remember. my mom always sang to us. my song was the "riddle" (i gave my love a cherry) and my brother's song was "five hundred miles" and "at midnight when the cattle are sleeping."

i sang to my children when they were babies all the time. my oldest daughter even wrote her writing test about it when she was in high school---she talked about me singing to her and about how it was soothing, as she got older, to hear me singing to the littler ones. i have a really low voice, so i know it wasn't fantastic singing---but i'm glad it meant something to her.

My mom would mainly sing You Are My Sunshine, and Buffalo Gals. I sing You Are My Sunshine, Sweet Child O' Mine, and Brown Eyed Girl (well Brown Eyed Boy in my case lol)

My dad would sing Blue Eyes Cryin In The Rain, I Don't Hurt Anymore and Silver Wings. I don't know the names of the songs my mother sang and I have never herd them since I'm guessing they were quite old ( i remember most the words though and now sing them to my own child ) Sad Movies Always Make Me Cry, Your Love Is Safe With Me and A Man Without A Woman, something like that anyway...

You are my sunshine was the main one I remember- that and one of the verses of Away in a manger - "Be near me Lord Jesus I ask thee to stay close by me forever and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care. And stay by thier cradle till morning is nigh."

And I loved the Anne Murray collection of children songs she had. I'd love to have that for my kids- it has Teddy bear picnic, Hey daddy theirs a dragon in the driveway, Why oh why oh why, Stars are the window to Heaven... I don't know what happened to that tape. Wish I could find that collection somewhere.

And I have a vivid memory of my Dad playing brahms lullabye and twinkle twinkle for me on his violin.

Now, the songs I sing to my kids: Winkin, blinkin and Nod, Look to the Rainbow, Stars are the windows to heaven, You are my sunshine, several Gershwin tunes and some songs from the '30's, He knows my name, God knew your name... etc. I studied voice in college and sing/play for my church choir so there is a lot of singing and music in our home. Oh- and all the regular nursury songs too- Grand ol duke, Ring around the rosie...

My Mom would sing a German folk song to me, it was my favorite. In English it goes, "You are my pretty baby, you are my pretty girl". She would also sing, "Found a Peanut" to me and at the end the little girl dies from eating a rotten peanut. As an adult I asked my mom , "What were you thinking???"

I made up two songs that only my son would know. It was a way of him having an identification with just me. I had heard a story of a mother whose abducted children were rescued along with others and she was able to get them to come forward by singing her personal songs.

My mom used to sing old songs that I have never heard of (other than her singing them to me) .... one that I remember was called "all because she kissed me... goodnight". One line in it was, "I said my pajamas and put on my prayers, vacuumed my clothes and ironed the stairs..." I used to giggle everytime! iIthought it was soo funny!I will always remember her singing that song to me!
