We got our son a trike. One of those smart trikes that converts from 7months to 3 years. He's only 21/2 and we have already worn it out! The best thing i ever brought him!

Chalk and bubbles is a good idea. My son turned one in January so we couldnt go outside and play though. So we got him an Aqua Doodle. Its just a mat with a marker type thing that you fill up with water and he can draw all over it. Then when it dries its blank again. I just watch him when he's teething cuz he tries to put the marker thing in his mouth, but it is just water. It's also not a whole lot of water so he doesnt get soaked or anything else for that matter.

I second the chalk and bubbles. My son loves them! A infant/toddler swing is also a good investment. You can even find some that attach to a door frame if you live in an apartment. Other ideas are balls of all sorts, any sort of push or ride-on toy, toddler crayons (the really thick ones that are "washable"), a really big stuffed animal he can jump on, glow in the dark stars for his room.... Recently my son got a collapsible tunnel through which he can crawl. It folds up like a spring so I can easily put it away. Though, that might be a better 2-year old gift. My sons favorite thinks about birthdays are the "happy birthday cake" and blowing out the candles. You can get some of those fake tea candles that you can turn on and off with a switch if you are worried about the flame.

My son LOVED his lawnmower!!!!! the one that blows bubbles, but the best thing we did was take the gear out so that it pushed easier, it didn't blow bubbles after that, he had more fun with it. Side walk chalk was another huge hit, and bubbles. They have one at wal mart, i think its a dollar, but it has a large wand so that they don't have to blow on it, they can just move it and it makes a bubble. Also they make chunk trucks, they are like the size of a softball, they are soft rubber, my son loved those. Well anything car, truck or train related to be honest.

Hope that helps. I can say also some of the best toys I ever got was at garage sales.

I knew from experience of nieces and nephews that 1 year olds have no idea what all the fuss is about and aren't really interested in the actual presents, and more interested in the crinkly, shiny paper so when our daughter turned 1 we wrapped a couple of boxes up and she had fun tearing off the paper. We did buy her a few biggish toys that we knew she would like, like a set of big lego blocks and a music mat but we just added those to her toy room and let her discover them for herself.

We also asked friends and relatives to contribute anonymously to a "Wishing Well" rather than buy her presents and we used the money to start her "College Fund" and honestly on the day she was so overwhelmed by all the attention and didn't understand what was going on so she really didn't miss out.

My son got lots of books, some of the big mega blocks, clothes (of course) a toy cell phone-which was great because now he doesn't go after mine so much..umm and then I got him a smaller ride on truck that makes the beeping and back-up sounds-he still LOVES this! Don't over spend or get too much because he is still young..and if he is anything like my son he will just end up playing with the boxes lol
