Hi Jacey! I learned potty training from my next door neighbor years ago - she had three daughters of her own and had owned a daycare - she's a pro! Her first tip was to always, always potty train during the spring and summer when you can be outdoors and/or home to spend more time with the little ones.
2. She bought me cloth training pants and advised me to always "double bag" my girls meaning two pair at a time. It lets the child "know" when they've pottied, but the second pair helps to absorb any messes.
3. Take the potty chair everywhere you go. I would take the potty chair outdoors with us for playtime or when I would work in the yard or garden. Set the kitchen timer for 30 minutes and when it rings, everything stops so "we" can potty! Mom can sit in a chair beside the potty chair. Don't worry if your child does nothing to begin with and don't make him/her sit for more than 2-3 minutes at first. Make a game out of racing to the chair when the timer goes off! Reset the timer for 30 minutes. At the end of every 30 minutes, sit the child on the potty chair and sit beside him/her. When you go back inside, continue this cycle.
4. I did this with both of my daughters. Because I followed the spring/summer advice, my oldest was potty trained at 2 1/2 and the younger at 24 months. It only took us a week to get the basics down, and not long after that to master bowel control. I never rewarded my kids with candy. We simply sat every 30 minutes, usually with a book that we could read in a short period of time.
Good luck!
