When did your child stop using the pacifier?

My daughter is 3. She only uses her pacifier at nighttime. My husband and I have talked a lot about weaning her off of it (taking it away), but so far have not done so. We go between thinking it's fine to thinking it really has to go.

I would like to hear from people who let their child decide when they were done. How old were they? Did you encourage them to stop using the pacifier? What was your philosophy about pacifier use?

My daughter was 3. We were about where you are at - back and forth. Weaning didn't work for us. It had to be cold turkey. We threw all of them away but one. We took it on a road trip. On the way back my husband claimed to have dropped it in a river. Yeah, lame. But she bought it. Then my sister texted me posing as a new baby who found it down the river. Yeah, really lame. But you know what? She loved it. Her "see-doo" is off with the new baby Beatrice who also likes purple best. LOL. It was weird because it was totally on a whim but I just had a feeling it would be okay.

12 and 14 months. No more bottle and we went to sip cup and I stopped it I between the two. I think the pack is soothing but I was also worried about teeth and learning to soothe self. I loved the binky. My older son freaked out for a little while without it but I wanted them to learn to soothe self.
