Ahh, you need the "Ferber" book. You can find it in the baby help book section. It is a god-send. To sum it up: Imagine if in the middle of the night you didn't have your pillow. You reach over the side of the bed and realize it's totally gone. Now you are awake and upset trying to figure out where the hell your pillow is. It is part of your sleep association. You have (lovingly) taught him to fall asleep only with the help of the above mentioned and he really doesn't know how to put himself back to sleep. He can be trained in about 4 nights to put himself to sleep, but night 1 and 2 are SUPER hard on you. Things that effect this are illness, growth spurts (they are hungry), or an inconsistant schedule. I promise, once you do this it is amazing. I also play Baby Einstein lullaby music when it is time for my daughter to go to bed and all through the night (softly) in her room. It's an auditory clue to trigger her brain to slow down. The book is awesome. Be strong - hope this helps.
