Has anyone ever heard of the birth control called IMPLANON? My OB was telling me it is like the size of a match stick and it is placed in your upper arm and it serves as one of the most effective birth control methods so far...Has anyone ever heard of it? If so, what was your experience on it or what is your current experience with it?

Hi Amanda, I have had two - the first one I LOVED. For both I had a local anethetic for insertion and removal so it did not hurt but I have a weak stomach so the 'pulling' and 'pushing' made me feel a bit sick :o) After that I had no periods and I hardly ever noticed it was there. With the second the dr put it in further forward in my arm so I was always brushing it with my boob and my kids just managed to wack it every time they were playing with me! I had one period and then nothing, but found the implant so uncomfortable I had it taken out after a few months (and immediately got pregnant!!!!! Be warned - your fertility comes back straight away!). My arm still hurts somtimes too if the kids manage to give it a really good poke and I can only assume that it is because I have some scar tissue in my arm. It has only been a few months since I had it out, so I am hoping it will calm down with some more time.

Also I have heard that it is 100% effective BUT only if implanted at the right time of your cycle and you need to make sure you can feel it under your skin after it is implanted, if the dr sticks it under the muscle or too deep in the tissue the implant can become 'lost' - that is, it might not be in exactly the same place when you go to have it removed, leading to larger than normal scars (my scars ar both really small, and both the insertion and removal cuts were made in the same spot so I only have one scar for each implant) or my dr was telling me that he had seen 'lots' of women (who he did not implant!) who needed ultrasounds to determine were the implant was before they could be removed.

It also lasts for three years, so if you are between babies or looking for long term contraception my advice is to give it a go - you might love it, and if you don't, you can always have it out :o)

my best friend just got hers and she loves it! She said it didnt hurt at all when they put it in and aside from feeling it when you touch the exact spot its in you really dont know she has it. she hasnt had any of the side effects they say are possible and seems really happy with it.

I work in a Family Medicine clinic, so I have heard of this. Most women are very happy with an Implanon. I do hear, however, that it is VERY expensive if your insurance doesnt cover it, so I woul check into that before getting it inserted.

Best wishes to you!
