I am turning to you guys on here to give me some real answers from real moms. I have decided to start giving my 4month 2wk old little girl some rice cereal because she seemed hungry and has really seemed to enjoy eating it. She has been around 15 lbs for about 3 weeks and really hasn't gained a ton. What I have been doing it just giving it to her twice a day. Once in the morning times and then onces in the afternoon. I do not want her to stop drinking as much breast milk since that has more nutrition in it than the cereal. So is that too much??? I usually make no more than a tsp full prepared and she eats almost all of it but also nurses after and before it. What should I tell my daycare? I am thinking about just keeping it as an at home thing because I want to make sure she is eating enough breast milk. What do you real moms think?

Personally, I'm a big supporter of exclusive nursing until babies are six months (as recommended by the AAP), but, if there is any type of supplement, that it takes place at child care. The only way to maintain your milk supply in the coming months is for her to eat as much off of you when she is home with you.

Also, babies stomachs tend to grow at six months of age. This means that if you start solids when they are six months, they usually continue drinking the same amount of breastmilk. Right now, she is probably not actually drinking as much milk from you as she was before you started on the cereal, which may decrease your supply a little bit. Then, when she gets that six month growth spurt, she will want to nurse more frequently to build your supply back up.

In the end, though, every baby is different. All you can do is find what works best for the two of you and keep at it. If she's happy, and you're happy, then there's no need to rock the boat.
