I'm not sure that 16 month baby has the understanding of time out for it to be any use. They probably wouldn't 'get it' and the behaviour probably wouldn't be extinguished by time out. I'd always found that distraction and fun to move a child of this age away from unwanted behaviour worked well.

I am sure you have watched Super Nanny, she tells it like it is. One minute for each year. So with your son I would do 1.5 minutes in time out. Get down to his level, look him in the eye, and calmly tell him why he is in time out. Keep putting him back to the time out spot each time he gets up. Be consistant. A hug, kiss, and him saying he is sorry for doing what he has done when the 1.5 minutes are up! Use a stool, a step, or any spot other than his room for the time outs.

16 months is too young for a time out. I would suggest waiting until the child is 2

:) I have a 20m old I am working on time outs! He has to sit on the couch for 1 minute. And unless he totally spazzes out, I let him down w/a hug and a smooch and say, "Now son, we do not ___fill in the blank____ or we'll have to take a time out".

Hasn't had much of an impact yet... but it's a work in progress.

Place child on a low chair or on the floor in a designated place and tell them why they are there. Be stern and use only a few words. Time out should only last for a minute at this age. If they get up, keep putting them back and say "we are in timeout". When a minute is up, explain to them that thier behavior is not ok and tell them why. Tell your child that they need to say sorry and give hugs to whoever was hurt by thier actions (even if all they did was not listen or follow directions, they still hurt you by not listening). Good luck!
