Dr. Ferber does not suggest using the method outlined in his book unless your baby is AT LEAST 4 months old. We started it when my daughter was about 6 months and it has worked great. I satrted a group about the method, if anyone is interested. Its called, "Supporter's of Dr. Ferber's Method"!

I have heard a rumor that the 'Cry it out" approach can lead to high blood pressure for the child later in life. I have no idea where I heard that but I never did like the idea. Good luck. It's a little different for every kid.

If your baby is exclusively breast fed, sleeping through the night will depend on how much he weighs and how much he eats in the evening. It is perfectly appropriate to push him to 6 hours. Once he is reliably putting himself to sleep, the rest will fall into place. I would definitely try to have him go all night by 7-8 months at the latest, before separation anxiety sets in.
In general, I found that reading too many books made me crazy, since every baby is a bit different.

I found his book very hard to read, but liked some of the concepts about sleep independence. I prefer Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. 4-6mo is the best time to start sleep training.

Try reading the book "Baby Wise". I used this method with both of my children and it REALLY works. It only takes about 7 - 10 days and I promise, you will be sleeping through the night.

No experience with Ferber -- not my thing. But I did have success with the "No Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley. Good luck!
