I'm just about finished with my maternity leave and am returning to teaching in about a week. Any suggestions for a new working mom?

When you are at school focus on school, when you are at home focus on your baby. I know with teaching it is hard to compartmentalize work to work hours, but set up a schedule of when you can do work, and when you will be with your baby!

It can be a sucker punch to the gut thats for sure. I found it really difficult because of my daughters (thankfully minor) health problems after birth and the fact that I was leaving her after only six months to first go to school then back to work. Best bit of advice I can give is sit down with your signifigant other at least a few weeks before and hash out what jobs will belong to whom and what jobs will be shared, etc. This way you don't have those back to work fights such as ... you did the laundry, dishes, vacuuming, diaper changes, etc. all before why should that change now your back at work. We can expect some pretty ridicoulous things of each other unless you set the score straight right off the bat... So good luck, squelch the guilt and keep in mind your doing whats best for yourself and your family.

I agree. I dreaded going back, but every day gets easier and easier. You will definitely be spending less time in the classroom in your "spare" time (nights and weekends) so when you get back try to get organized quickly and prioritize things. The hardest part for me was being okay with just being ready for the next day. I couldn't get enough stuff togeher for the whole week anymore and leave at quitting time. It'll be fine and soon you'll have a winter break and then a spring break and then summer and the cycle starts again. Just take it one day at a time and enjoy every minute with your little one.

I was also a teacher who went back to work after my first son was born. I was home for the first 10 months so it was difficult. I made a photo album (clothed covered) with pictures of the 3 of use for him to keep at daycare and of course I had his photo in my classroom! Since teachers are always on the go I didn't have too much time to cry and as soon as I could I left to go pick him up! Good Luck and summer will be here before you know it!!
