Can't kick the colds!

My one year old son has been sick (congestion, cough, sometimes fever) for almost 4 months straight. He's had 5 rounds of antibiotics, and those are the only times he's well. He's in daycare, and I know kids get sick there, but come on! This seems pretty extreme to me. Am I being overly concerned here, or does this sound unusual? We've seen an ENT who suggested removing his adenoides to 'see if it helps' but there has been no diagnosis, so it feels like a shot in the dark to me. I'm not willing to put my child through that unless it's necessary. I just want him to be healthy again!

We have not tested for strep because his tonsils are not inflamed. Thankfully we have not had ear problems either. He seems to keep getting viruses that hang around until he gets a sinus infection, then we administer antibiotics. He's great while the antibiotics are in his system and then 3-5 days after the course is done he gets sick again and we start all over. We keep a cold air humidifier running all the time in his room, a Vicks wallplug too. We use saline and a bulb syringe to try to keep his nose from running. But nothing seems to break the cycle. I love my daycare provider, but I can't help but think they're not doing a great job of disinfecting the toys or washing their hands. Something is spreading this sickness to him, and since he's the only one in our house that seems to get it, I wonder if it's that. I am just so frustrated that we can't get past this! I wish I could be sick for him.

Let me tell you as a nurse in a minor care and emergency dept. that I see this all the time and unfortunately you are doing the right thing. It is one of those things that has to run it's course. If it is a viral thing then there is really not a whole lot that can be done. I would suggest that if you do see the ENT again about the adenoids then talk to the doctor about the tonsils as well, this will alleviate throat problems in the future. You will want to check for allergies but the fact is that until your children develop a stronger immunity then they will be more prone to getting sick. It's horrible and as a mother you fell horrible to not be able to do more for your children. Just hang in there and it should go away eventually. Oh, have the kids been tested for Strep, influenza or mono? These are easy tests that just swab the nose and throat. I know that we've had some positive mono and flu come up in the last few weeks.

My son has had the same thing.  He is not in daycare.  His grandma watches him with his 2 year old cousin, who does not have these problems.  We get the cough and congestion to go away for about 3 weeks and then it comes right back.  He has also had some bad ear infections so we are considering having the tubes insterted to help with the drainage.  We also had an inhaler prescribed because we thought he might have asthma.  It help to releive immediately, but does not cure.  Have you had your son tested for allergies?  We are not sure what to do at this point either.
