Hi all. My three year old had a cold and now has a lingering cough that gets worse at night, bad enough she keeps waking herself up, not to mention her 19 mo. old sister (they share a room- out of necessity). I have her sleeping propped on two skinny pillows, I have a cool-mist humidifier going, and I admit I have been giving her the cough medicine for tods (correct dosage and nothing else!). Any ideas? We're going on a week now and she's pretty tired and crabby during the day from not enough sleep!

I WOULD STOP W/ THE COUGH MEDS AND TAKE HER TO THE DOCTOR. FIRST OF ALL YOU DON'T WANT YOUR BABY TO GET IMMUNED TO THAT STUFF, BECAUSE WHEN SHE REALLY NEEDS IT , IT WONT WORK.

go see the doctor, but in the mean time some light pounding on her back..might loosen up the stuff inside and relax her and vapor rub is good too.. the also have a vapor plug in that releases the vapor in the air.. I works well...plus there is a baby bath that also has the menthol ingredient from johnson and johnson..good luck!

The one thing I started doing just last year after I got the suggestion from a friend was lathering Vick's Vaporub on their feet, putting socks on and letting them go to bed like that. It works wonders! I have even used it on myself and it works incredibly. Not sure why, but it does!

I agree with Melodie, you should visit the doctor. In addition, try to stay away from dairy as it helps create more mucus. Check your humidifier to make sure it is clean everday. My son gets like this every winter and we push water as much as we can and use vicks vabor rub to soothe him.

Having a cough for this long may mean she has broncontis, so you may want to consider having the doctor check her out. Another thought could be using musinex as the cough medicine (they have this for children) - this helps break up the mucus caught in her lungs (hence the cough). Also, I always found that Vick's vapor rub on the chest can help out a cough.
