Both my children grind their teeth in their sleep, they are 5yrs and 2yrs. So does my hubbie and it gets worse with him when he is stressed at work.

Thank you Michelle for the info! It is great to hear that it is probably just from his new teeth coming in!

Good Morning Moms,

I am a dentist in Minnesota and see several youngsters who grind/clench their teeth. It is unfortunate that there is nothing we can do to stop the behavior or protect the teeth/jaw. As adults we can wear a nightgaurd to protect our teeth at night but even as adults, during the day, there is nothing we can do besides encourage the patients to become aware of when they are doing it and try behavior modification.

The good news is that most kids begin grinding and/or clenching when they are loosing their primary teeth and permanent teeth are erupting. That transition can make it difficult for some kids to find a comfortable "bite." So they begin to try to "make" their teeth come together like they use to; sometimes referred to as a functional shift. When the transition stage ends so does the clenching!

Quoting Stephanie:

I need help with this, too.  I have 2 year old who grinds his all night, and during the day if he gets mad.

I couldn't even imagine if he did it during the day too! Hopefully someone has something for us!
