I myself had a 4 yr old little boy. We had a big problem with this. He is great for EVERYONE besides me. Time outs and taking toys away didn't work. Sitting and talking to him didn't work. Now when I am home we are on a nice schedual. I found out that also by allowing him more input into things has helped also. We set up a week of events and he helps me plan what days we do what. Anything from Fishing, Riding bikes (mommy running next to him), hiking on a nature trail, and swimming are the big things that we can do in an hr or 2 and be home so that bath and bed time will be done at decent hours. This has helped a lot. I had to explain that in order to do these things that he has to be a big boy and listen to me. If he does not then we can not do the events planned for the next day and he will have to help me do a deep cleaning of the house or pulling weeds out of the yard. He normally does not like this idea and starts back acting right.

4 is just a tough age. To little for the infant things, but not big enough for the school aged things.
