How do you know that your baby has an allergy to milk products? I have a 7 week old son.

If you're a "by the book mom", don't read....

My oldest son was given the advice of switching to soy after tons of formula try-outs. Then we had prescription formulas. Then formulas that were costing $48.00 a can. He spit up, like projectile vomited EVERY time we fed. I finally, against all advice, figured I'd try milk. At 4/5 months. Yup, Whole milk. Worked incredibly well. Granted, I "was against medical advice" Doctors just finally gave in and gave me a prescription for vitamins that he'd miss out on through formula....and then I had a very happy, healthy, non-vomiting child. My second son, same problems. Switched to milk at about 7wks....perfect. What do you think they used way back when....I mean, there hasn't always been formula!!!

Both of my children were highly allergic to milk when they were babies.  My son (who is now 2 and tolerates milk just fine) was very colicky, gassy and spit up with every feeding.  He also got a distended stomache and had to be put on Neocate to solve his issues.  My daughter who is three months old have similar issues, but to a lesser extent.  We put her on soy, but she was still fussy and has very sour smelling diapers.  We finally settled on Nutramigin, and she tolerates it OK, although she still spits up with every feeding.  She also has eczema, which is aparently common in babies allergic to milk.

My cousins baby was allergic to her breast milk, but they didn't find out for several months. He was very very colicy, very very gassy, Always had intestinal issues. Finally, he was having moderately bloody poops. They ran some tests, took him off breast milk and on perscription formula, and now he's a new kid!!! Her second one they just put right on the perscription formula and she's been great. I'd go to the doc if I had any worries.

hi you will normally find once your baby has had there milk feed they will bring it back up and this will happen after every feed . my son had the same problem so the doctors suggested trying a different formula in the end the doctor moved him on to cows milk . he is fine to drink milk now but see ur gp for advice .

The baby may start getting a red rash. However, please be caustious and take baby to the doc. At this age, it is hard for a non-doctor to see if the baby is allergic.

My son is very gassy. I switched him to gentle formula which seemed to help some but now he is kind of constipated and his poop is really formed and hard. That is why I was wondering how you know.

I don't know about the allergy at that age but I know both of my kids (ages 6 and 8months) had a hard time with regular formula,  I had to put them on soy when I was done breastfeeding, my daughter never had any other issues with milk products only the milk based formula
