My daughter is 12 years old and we bought her her own laptop for school work. Of course as soon as we did that she was on it ALL THE TIME and getting onto all kinds of sites that she should not have been on. So my husband and I set the parental controls on the computer and restricted the web access to only certain times of the day and for certain lengths of time. So far it has worked...

Set a time limit with a timer and If she goes over that time pull the plug. I mean really pull the plug and keep it with you. She will learn the lesson and respect you in the end.Plus always have the computer in a public place in the house. Ours is in the livingroom. It keeps them off of bad sites and lets you monitor the sites there on always.I did this with my 15 year old son and it worked. I say off the computer and he gets off the computer now!!!! Also I must know the log in names and pass words to check there my space and facebook accounts. Its a rule for them to keep the account to chat with there friends.

If she likes e-mail, try something like zoobuh.com where for $1/month parents can control what time of the day their child can access e-mail. It actually has a "grounded" feature that disallows access during the time limit you set. There are alot of other parental control options like being able to control who your child gets and sends messages to. There is a blog feature included also.

We also use it as a privilege that can be removed if our 12 year old daughter doesn't follow other house rules (like getting off the computer when she's supposed to & without talking back!).

Good luck and God bless!

Question - where is the computer? Is it in her room, or out in a common area? And how long does she currently use it versus how long you want her to use it?
