not just food off the highchair, that has actually gotten better.. more toys now, ALL of them, even at daycare. We are trying to teach him by telling him 'what' to do vs telling him NO..any suggestions? I have heard this is typicaly for boys as part of their learning process and to be patient and reinforce what he should do with it

I have a 19 month old boy and a 2 1/2 month old little girl. My son too has thrown things and likes to beat toys against the furniture or walls at times. He's exploring however, I try to get down to his level, look him in the eyes and tell him that's not nice or show him the right way to play with his toys. If that doesn't work and he continues to throw a fit or whatever, we place him in time out and tell him not to get up until I tell him to. I'll have to stay nearby to make sure he doesn't move. and if he does we start all over again. He only stays there for no longer than 2 min's because of his age. They say a minute per the age of child. He has done this enough times now with in the last few months that he knows what time out is and that's all we have to tell him now if he starts acting "ugly". I try not to resort in spankings and for him time out seams to work pretty good. Now it takes time and patience as anything else does, but it's rewarding in the end. After he is done with time out, I get down to his level again and explain to him really quickly that that wasn't nice and to play right and to give me a hug and kiss. He does...maybe this is something that will work for you too...oh I too have animals, two dogs, and one he likes to just sit and bounce on, but he's learning not to do that too! Good luck

and dr told us to not give him a 'reaction', divert the attention elsewhere, so we are patiently working through this!

thanks for the suggestions! Our son hit our dog last weekend for the 1st time, and, he has slapt our faces a few times (shocked us!), so just sat him down in the middle of the floor and said NO hitting

Hi, I am going through the same thing!! And i just take the toy that he throws away from him and tell him that is not nice, than give it back to him in about 10 min, sometimes he understands. My son also likes to hit our dog and us with toys and I just do the same thing. I don't know how to stop him from hitting. I figure if I take it away than he will realize that it is not meant to be thrown and sometimes it works for me, but it is ditterent with every child..
