What age is ok to let them stay home by themselves?

My son just turned 10 years old. I work on sundays during the day and my husband is usually home to watch the kids, but now he just recently got a new job that makes him work sundays but only for 4 hours, (the store is not even a block away from the house). I don't know what age is appopriate for a child to stay home by himself. It would only be a few hours, but I don't know if its ok. What does everybody think?

Not all states have specific laws, in fact relatively few do. I am sorry I didn't look at your location. I live in NC and here children under eight should not be left alone- but that is according to the FIRE code not the dept. of health and human services. You have to take into account your child's maturity and access to emergency assistance. I know that I was babysitting other peoples' infants at eleven, but would not let an eleven year old babysit for me. You might want to first check with your Dept of Social Services just to make sure you don't live in a state with a mandatory minimum age.

I have no idea, i've only left my stepson (11) alone with my sleeping daughters (5 &3) for 10 minutes while i've done an emergency store run, nearest store is thankfully a 1/2 mile away. I don't what to suggest to you but do you have a trusting neighbour that can keep an eye out for him? Maybe ask her or ask a fellow class mom, if your kid and their kid can play together for the few hours while you are at work and in return have her kid over for dinner or something.

I hope you figure it out. Best of luck.
