WHAT AGE IS TO YOUNG TO HAVE A CELL PHONE?

[deleted account] ( 8 moms have responded )

I HAVE TWO BOYS AGES 11 & 12. BOTH OF THEM HAVE CELL PHONES... MY REASON FOR GETTING THE PHONES WAS SO THAT THEY CAN GET INTOUCH WITH ME AS NEEDED OR WHEN EVER THEY GO OVER TO THEIR FATHERS HOUSE, I CAN REACH THEM AS NEEDED.

I WORRY A LOT ABOUT MY BOYS, AND GETTING THE PHONES GAVE ME A LITTLE MORE SECURITY KNOWING I CAN REACH THEM AT ANYTIME!

i have 4 kids, and the two older ones got a cell when they became teenagers, now my 11 year old wants one in the worst way but i keep saying she's to young.heres the kicker, she is starting to venture out more and there has been times where i needed to get ahold of her but couldn't.so i am thinking about getting her one now just so i can keep tabs on her.i guess it really depends on the situation.

My oldest got a cell phone at the beginning of grade 7 because she was going to sports activities after school and I wanted to be able to get in touch with her. She has to leave it in her locker all day but I can text her if I'm going to be late getting home from work and that way no one worries.

I totally agree...It is up to the parent, but as a teacher....please teach them to turn it off when they come to school!!!

Hi my younger twins age 10 (11) next month and are getting mobiles for their b'day, i don't feel they need it now as they are always with me, as i gethome from work befroe they get home from school and afta school i take them to afta school activites 3 days a week, but when they go off to secondary school they wll definately need it as it will give me security knowing i can contact them. Every parent knows their child and shood decided how old to give their child a mobile....a friend have given her son one and he is 7, i feel too yound but it's up to the parent.

My fiance gave my 9 yr old a cell phone. The deal is, we have "custody" of it; he uses it (with permission) to call his father (my ex-husband) or other family members, the plan we have allows us to go on-line and block numbers we don't allow him to call. The nice part is that we have a "spare" in case our phones break or need to be charged (we often forget to put them charging)!

I got my first cellphone when I was 13 but that's only because that's when I started using the city bus to get to school and I was working on a farm out of town so my parents felt it would be safer for me, which is has been. I believe that it should be an safety item not just an accessory and I plan on getting phones for my children when they are older.

So long as their using so you can keep in touch with them I think thats fine. My daughter has had hers since 11 but even before that on field trips I used to give her one so I could make sure she was ok and take it back when she got home safley. She only carries hers around when she's not with me. I told her this isn't a fashion accessorie it's a neccessity so that no matter where you are if you need me I'll be there.
