I've heard I should set up my sons "Big boy bed" at 2 years old and some say 3. I am worried he will just get out of bed and go in to the living room and play with toys.

Your son will let you know when he is ready....set the crib mattress to the lowest level it will go, when he starts climbing over the rail, set up the bed...he'll get at those toys sooner or later. LOL!

My daughter used to get out and slip between the banister railings to get down stairs, despite the baby gate! Pretty ingenious at 21 months! She got the bed!

We had a convertable crib so we did it around 20 months. She still thinks of it as her bed but was so excited. The main thing is we talked about it being "her big girl bed." We also keep a gate on her door (she's 2 and a half) and that way when she wakes up she calls for us. We're working on potty training now so we're starting to keep it unlocked at night but it helps us (especially for safety reasons b/c we live in an old house with basement stairs

We moved our son into a toddler bed the day he turned 1. He's 17 mo. now and sleeps perfectly through the night, loves his bed, and just plays in his room awhile when he wakes up. I think the sooner the better.

my first son was 20 months into a toddler bed, my second son was 22 months into a twin bed. There were really no major issues. For their safety I did put up a gate across their doorway so they could not leave their rooms and get into any trouble. It took just a few days for my older son to adjust and maybe a week for my youngest. I made it fun by getting special sheets and comforters and there are no toys in their rooms to entice them to get out of bed. Just be consistent and you won't have trouble. They are certainly smart enough, and adaptable at age 2. good luck

We did it at 3 years old - actually on his birthday we took apart the crib and converted it to a full size bed. He is 3.5 now and he is doing fine. He has never gone to play with toys but if he does wake up in the middle of the night, he ends up climbing into bed with my husband and I and we don't realize it until morning! It's pretty cute :) He loves his bed. We got him vintage plane themed bedding and re-did the decor in his room - he had fun doing this with us. And now he walks around calling it "Thomas' big boy bed"! Good luck.
